Arduino Network

The Arduino provides several ways to communicate off-board. SPI, I2C, and Serial are supported. How can these be used to create a network of interconnected Arduinos (and maybe other platforms)?

Inventing a new network is a waste of time. There are plenty of existing network definitions; some simple and most difficult on a small platform. DNP (Distributed Network Protocol) is used in many US utilities to control substation equipment. It is a big protocol but can be stripped down to a few basic elements.
